New research from Lancaster Insurance has revealed that the DB5 is still the ultimate 007 vehicle, beating a host of famous Bond cars from across the franchise's six-decade history.

When asked to choose their favourite James Bond car, more than a quarter of respondents (26%) selected the Aston Martin DB5 from Goldfinger and Thunderball.

Coming a close second was another Aston Martin, the DBS V12 from Casino Royale, which secured 24% of the vote. The results highlight just how closely Bond remains associated with Aston Martin.

According to the survey, these are the Bond cars that have captured the public's imagination the most:

  3. Ford Mustang Mach 1 (Diamonds Are Forever) – 12%

  6. BMW 750iL (Tomorrow Never Dies) – 6%
  7. BMW Z8 (The World Is Not Enough) – 6%
  8. Citroën 2CV (For Your Eyes Only) – 6%
  9. Toyota 2000GT (You Only Live Twice) – 3%
  10. Sunbeam Alpine Series II (Dr. No) – 2%

The list is a fascinating snapshot of Bond's car history, featuring everything from gadget-laden Aston Martins and futuristic BMWs, to unlikely classics such as the Citroën 2CV and Sunbeam Alpine.

Bond fans prefer classics over supercars

While Bond films have featured an impressive variety of modern performance cars over the years, the survey suggests audiences still prefer the spy behind the wheel of something with heritage.

Nearly six in ten respondents (57%) said they would like the next James Bond to drive a vintage or classic vehicle. By comparison, 39% favoured a modern supercar, while just 4% felt a contemporary mass-market car would be the right choice.

The findings suggest that for many people, classic cars remain an essential part of the Bond formula, combining style, character and a sense of timeless British cool.

Which classic car should Bond drive next?

The survey also explored which classic car not previously associated with Bond would make the perfect future 007 vehicle.

Topping the list was another motoring icon, the Jaguar E-Type, which secured an impressive 33% of the vote.

Often described as one of the most beautiful cars ever made, the E-Type's blend of elegance and performance clearly makes it a natural fit for Britain's most famous secret agent.

The top choices were:

  1. Jaguar E-Type – 33%
  2. Lamborghini Countach LP400 – 20%
  3. Porsche 911 – 17%
  4. Mercedes-Benz 300SL (W198) – 9%
  5. Mini Cooper – 7%

For more than six decades, cars have played a starring role in the Bond franchise, becoming almost as memorable as the characters themselves. And if these results are anything to go by, Britain's motoring enthusiasts would choose classic style when it comes to 007. Whether it's the gadget-packed Aston Martin DB5, the sleek DBS V12, or perhaps a future Jaguar E-Type appearance, one thing is clear: Bond and great cars remain the perfect partnership.
